GERMANY – In its 50th anniversary year, Ligna reflects on its origins, which began in 1975 when it branched off from Hannover Messe during the oil crisis to become an independent trade fair.

Now, half a century later, the woodworking and wood processing industry is facing new economic challenges. Yet, Ligna is once again stepping forward to offer optimism and forward-thinking solutions.

Six months before its May 2025 opening, Ligna has already secured commitments from 1,100 exhibitors covering over 105,000 square meters of exhibition space. By comparison, Ligna 2023 hosted 1,300 exhibitors across 114,000 square meters and attracted 80,000 visitors.

“The impressive registration numbers for Ligna 2025 send a strong message to the entire woodworking community,” says Stephanie Wagner, Head of Ligna at Deutsche Messe. “In today’s challenging economic climate, it’s far from certain that companies would commit to a major trade fair. But our exhibitors are investing in Ligna with large, complex stands to showcase their machines and systems in operation. This underscores the importance and relevance of Ligna, especially in this milestone year.”

Dr. Bernhard Dirr, Managing Director of VDMA Woodworking Machinery, highlights Ligna’s crucial role in driving innovation and investment: “Although the expected recovery is delayed, our surveys show that most companies anticipate a market upturn starting in the second quarter of 2025—perfectly timed for Ligna. Overcoming the current investment backlog will require confidence and trust, but also clear political support for innovation. Ligna 2025 couldn’t come at a better time, and I am confident it will generate significant momentum in the industry.”
