DIY / Home improvement is growing by 4.2% worldwide and cracking the 600 billion euro mark

ALEMANIA -  The global DIY and home improvement market achieved a total sales volume of 618 billion euros in 2019, exceeding the 600 billion euros mark for the first time.

913DIYCompared to the previous year (593 billion euros), the market grew by 4.22 percent. North America and Europe together account for around 86.6 percent of the market volume, although only 16 percent of the world's population live here. The DIY market on both continents comes together to 535 billion euros; that is an increase of 3.68 percent compared to 2018 (516 billion euros).

These are figures from the “Global Home Improvement Report 2020”. The European manufacturers' association Hima publishes the study annually in cooperation with the international DIY trade association Edra / Ghin. Data from the statistics department of the German publishing house Dähne Verlag, which specializes in the DIY market, is also incorporated into the work.

North America alone makes up 58 percent of the world market, Europe 28 percent. North America had the highest average per capita spending on DIY products in 2019 at 972 euros; a year earlier it was 932 euros.

Around 81 percent of the global DIY market (502.2 billion euros) is concentrated in just eight countries: USA, Germany, Canada, Japan, Great Britain, France, Australia and Italy. The three largest DIY markets in Europe (Germany, France and Great Britain) represent 50 percent of the total market volume on this continent.

The top 10 DIY retailers worldwide are Home Depot (USA), Lowe's (USA), Adeo (France), Kingfisher (Great Britain), Menards (USA), Bunnings (Australia), Obi (Germany), Bauhaus (Germany), Ace Hardware (USA) and Sodimac (Chile). Home Depot and Lowe's alone account for 26.3 percent of the total world market volume.
