Global DIY market is worth 589 billion euros

GLOBAL - In 2017, the DIY/home improvement world market turnover reached EUR 589 billion, an increase of 2.6 per cent compared to last year, according to Fediyma (European Federation of DIY Manufacturers).

810DIY3North America and Europe combined represent approximately 85 per cent of this market, although their joint population accounts for only 15 per cent of the world population. The DIY markets of these two continents total EUR 503 billion.North America and Europe cover 60 per cent and 28 per cent of the world market respectively.

North America had the highest average DIY expenditure per capita in 2017 with EUR 919.

Approximately 81 per cent of the global DIY market (EUR 477 billion) is concentrated in only 8 countries: the USA, Germany, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom, France, Australia and Italy. Moreover, the three major DIY countries in Europe (Germany, France and the United Kingdom) represent 52 per cent of the continent's market.

The top 10 major DIY retailers worldwide are Home Depot (USA), Lowe's (USA), ADEO (France), Kingfisher (UK), Bunnings Building (Australia), Menards (USA), OBI (Germany), Bauhaus (Germany), Sodimac (Chile) and Ace Hardware (USA).

Home Depot and Lowe's account for 25 per cent of the global market share.
