COLOMBIA – In the first half of 2024 (6M-2024), Colombia experienced a notable increase in its particleboard (PB / MDP) imports.
The total value of imports reached USD 84.99 million, reflecting a 15.9% rise compared to the same period in 2023. This growth is significant despite the fluctuations in import patterns from different countries of origin.
In terms of volume, the increase was 30%, from 153,502 cubic meters in 6M-2023 to 199,604 cubic meters in 6M-2024.
Ecuador as expected was the main supplier country, though its exports to Colombia decreased by 6.3%, totaling USD 52.93 million. This decline contrasts with the overall increase in imports.
Brazil saw a dramatic rise in exports to Colombia, with a 144.2% increase, reaching USD 14.53 million, highlighting Brazil’s growing role in Colombia’s particleboard market. Chile also contributed positively with a 29.0% increase, amounting to USD 9.54 million in exports. Spain and other countries saw significant increases, with exports rising by 130.4% and 131.2%, respectively, indicating a diversification in Colombia’s sources of particleboard.
Among importers, Madecentro remained by far the largest but saw a 10.0% decrease, importing goods worth USD 44.81 million. Dexco / Duratex significantly increased its imports by 137.2%, totaling USD 12.47 million, reflecting its growing market presence.
Other notable importers include Sodimac Colombia, which experienced a 115.5% increase, and Industrias Dofi, with a 129.0% rise. Industria de Muebles del Valle and Comercializadora Ecofort also showed impressive growth rates, with increases of 487.7% and 181.4%, respectively.
