Brazil’s furniture exports drop more than 43% in April

BRAZIL - Brazilian exports of wooden furniture dropped 43.3 percent in April 2020. Affected by COVID-19, Brazilian furniture shipments abroad reached USD 24.4 million against USD 43.2 million in April 2019.

The United States, with a drop of 38.1 percent remained in April the main market for Brazilian wooden furniture exports. Dispatches to this market amounted to USD 9.1 million compared to USD 14.7 million in April 2019. Peru was the only one of the top 5 markets for Brazilian furniture that grew (10.4 percent) in the period. In April 2020 Peru also surpassed the United Kingdom in the ranking as the second external market with USD 3.1 million compared to USD 2.8 million in the same month of the previous year.

The UK was the third destination, with a very strong drop of 63.9 percent, with USD 2.2 million in April 2020 compared to USD 6.3 million in the same month of 2019.

The fastest growing market for Brazilian exports of wooden furniture in April 2020 was Germany (+159.8 percent) reaching USD 771 thousand compared to USD 297 thousand in April 2020.

Exports of Brazilian wooden furniture to Chile and Uruguay also fell more than 60 percent.

Santa Catarina and Rio Grande Do Sul were the main states of origin for Brazilian exports of wooden furniture with USD 11.5 million and USD 6.8 million respectively and falls above 40 percent compared to April 2019.
