US producers of wooden moldings start trade cases against China and Brazil to address dumping and subsidies

USA - The Coalition of American Carpentry Producers (CAMP) asked on January 8th the United States Department of Commerce and the United States International Trade Commission (ITC) to restore the conditions of fair trade in wood moldings and other wood products between the United States, China and Brazil.

865DUMPINGPresented by Wiley Rein LLP, CAMP's new anti-dumping and countervailing duty cases defend an American industry that employs thousands of Americans and has existed for generations.

“Producers from China and Brazil have captured a large and growing portion of the wood mouldings market by pouring products into the US market, taking jobs away from American workers,” said Timothy C. Brightbill, CAMP's commercial advisor.

The market share of Brazil and China from 2016 to 2019 increased by more than 10 percentage points, while the US industry lost 7 to 9 percentage points of market share during the same period. The American industry also lost production, shipments, workers, hours worked, and gross, operational and net earnings during this period.

Millwork building materials subject to this petition include wood mouldings and other wood millwork products. Examples include interior and exterior door frames, casing, base mouldings, handrails, crown moulding, and panel moulding. In 2018, total sales of these products in the United States were approximately USD 1.3 billion.

CAMP's legal action seeks that the United States impose tariffs to compensate for damage caused to factories, workers and communities in the United States through these illegal actions by Chinese and Brazilian producers. CAMP's request is backed by manufacturers that comprise the vast majority of all wood moldings and other wood materials manufactured in the United States.
