Economic recession in Brazil reduces furniture trade deficit

BRAZIL - The furniture trade balance in the January to April 2016 period was the least negative (USD -4.4 million) since the same period of 2012, when a surplus of USD 6 million was obtained.

Compared to the same period of 2015, trade deficit was reduced by USD 77 million, however, these results are mainly due to the recession of Brazil’s economy.

Brazilian furniture imports in the January to April 2016 period totaled USD 184.3 million, compared with USD 277.7 million in the same period 2015 and representing a sharp drop of 33.6%. The supplier country to the Brazilian market most affected was China, which reduced sales by 45.3% from USD 108.8 million in the first four months of 2015 to USD 59.5 million in the same period 2016.

Brazilian furniture exports, despite a favorable exchange rate, fell 8.4% in the first four months of the year, totaling USD 179.9 million compared with USD 196.3 million in the same period of 2015. The United States, like in the first four months of 2015, remained as the main market with exports of USD 39 million, 4.3% less than in the same period of 2015 (USD 40.8 million). Exports also fell to the main Latin American markets: Argentina (-17.9%), Peru (-5.1%), Bolivia (-8.5%), Uruguay (-2.6%) and Chile (-12, 5%).
