Brazilian furniture exports continue to drop

BRAZIL - In the January - September period, Brazilian furniture exports fell by 10.8% to USD 449.7 million compared with USD 503.0 million in the same period of 2014.

Among the top 10 overseas markets only the US showed an increase (+ 15.6%) reaching USD 95.6 million. In the remaining 9 major markets a drop in exported value occurred. The largest decline was for exports to Argentina (- 20.3%), falling from USD 66.9 million in 2014 to USD 53.3 million this year. Likewise Brazilian furniture exports to other South American markets such as Uruguay, Bolivia and Chile declined over 7%.

Santa Catarina consolidated its position in the first nine months of the year as the largest furniture exporting state in Brazil, totaling USD 158.8 million (2014: USD 154.9 million), an increase of 2.5%. Furniture exports of Rio Grande do Sul fell 14.6%, totaling USD 136.2 million (2014: USD 159.4 million). The other major exporting states also saw their sales abroad drop: Paraná by -12.3% and Sao Paulo by -29.3%. This accumulated export drop of 10.8% occurs parallel to a devaluation of the BRR close to 50%. On January 1, 2015, the exchange rate was 1 USD = 2.65 BRR and on September 30, 2015 the exchange rate was 1 USD = 4.01BRR.
