PANAMA – Inter Ikea Systems B.V., owner of the Ikea Concept and global franchisor, has signed franchise agreements with Sarton Group to develop operations in Panama and Costa Rica. The move marks another step in Ikea’s expansion across the Americas.
Sarton Group, which already operates Ikea stores in the Spanish Islands, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico, will hold exclusive franchise rights for the two Central American markets. The company will introduce Ikea’s affordable home furnishing solutions and retail format, leveraging its regional experience to adapt to local needs.
Maria Johansson, Ikea Expansion Manager, said the agreements strengthen the brand’s long-term commitment to the Americas, improving accessibility and building stronger ties with customers, suppliers, and employees. Sarton Group Retail Manager Tony Tavira called the expansion “a significant milestone” and expressed confidence in the brand’s growth potential in Panama and Costa Rica.
Costa Rican trade officials, including Minister of Foreign Trade Manuel Tovar and Procomer General Manager Laura López, welcomed the investment, highlighting its potential to generate jobs, boost local suppliers, and integrate small and medium enterprises into global value chains.
Ikea operates over 480 stores and e-commerce platforms in 63 markets, receiving 899 million store visits and 4.6 billion online visits annually.
