BRAZIL – Sindmóveis Bento Gonçalves, promoter of the Salão Design Award, is very satisfied with the 827 projects that entered this 23rd edition – almost 200 more than last edition, when there were 629 competing projects.
Applications ended last week, and participants from nine countries are competing: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, Peru and Uruguay.
Winners will be chosen in two stages by two distinct groups of judges. In the first phase, the technical-functional commission will analyze the projects registered on the website, analyzing one by one the technical drawings, images and descriptions. This first group is comprised of Ana Brum, technical director at Centro Brasil Design; professor Maria Cecilia Loschiavo dos Santos; K1 Group Head Designer, Mateus Conceição; Ricardo Dal Piva, SENAI’s Wood and Furniture Technical and Technological Services analyst; and Silvana Carminati Heckman, head of the Brazilian Association of Interior Designers.
In this edition, there were no categories for accessories and lighting, only furniture projects were allowed. The five categories are now labeled “challenges”: Transforming Spaces Challenge; 2020 Brazilian Identity Challenge; Panel Use Challenge; Embedded Technology Challenge and Positivist Experiences Challenge.
The evaluation of the submitted projects will happen in the second half of September, and the disclosure of the selected projects for the next stage, on October 10th. In January, the finalists should send their products for the final stage, in Bento Gonçalves. Then, a new group of judges will make the aesthetic-creative assessment and chose the winning students and professionals.
Sponsored by Berneck and Interprint do Brasil, the Salão Design Award has been promoted by the Furniture Industries Union of Bento Gonçalves (Sindmóveis) since 1988. In this edition, the prize is BRL 10,000 for professionals and BRL 6,000 for students. The awards ceremony and product display will take place at Movelsul Brasil, during March 2020, in Bento Gonçalves. The winners will also participate in another exhibition the following year, during the São Paulo Design Weekend.
