FSC Appoints Dr. Subhra Bhattacharjee as New Director General

GERMANY – The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) International Board of Directors has appointed Dr. Subhra Bhattacharjee as the new Director General, effective October 1, 2024.

With over 20 years of experience in public policy, climate change, and sustainable development, Dr. Bhattacharjee has worked with governments, NGOs, and academia worldwide.

Her previous roles include significant positions at the United Nations and the Reserve Bank of India, as well as academic experience. She holds a Master of Philosophy in economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University and a Ph.D. in economics from Iowa State University.

Stuart Valentine, Chair of the FSC International Board, expressed confidence in Dr. Bhattacharjee’s leadership during this crucial period of growth for the organization. Dr. Bhattacharjee emphasized the urgent need to address climate and biodiversity crises through sustainable forest management, particularly concerning forest-dependent communities.

Outgoing Director General Kim Carstensen praised FSC’s contributions over his 12-year tenure and expressed confidence in Dr. Bhattacharjee’s vision. Dr. Peter Alele, Africa Regional Director, welcomed her appointment, highlighting its importance for expanding forest protection under the FSC label and promoting sustainability in Africa.

Dr. Bhattacharjee’s leadership is expected to bring fresh perspectives and energy as FSC continues to advocate for responsible forest management and resilience in the world’s forests.
