GERMANY – Markus Hüllmann, Chairman of the VDMA Woodworking Machinery Association, provided an optimistic outlook for the woodworking machinery sector at the press preview for Ligna 2025.

Despite economic challenges and global competition, Hüllmann believes European manufacturers are poised for a recovery, focusing on automation, technical excellence, and innovation tailored to the woodworking and furniture industry.

“While the past year was difficult, there are many reasons for optimism,” said Hüllmann. “By leveraging automation and engineering expertise, we can reduce production costs, improve quality, and maintain our competitive edge.”

In 2024, German manufacturers of woodworking machines saw a 15% decline in production, but the association expects a stable outlook in 2025, with increased orders starting in Q3. Exports dropped by 11.5% through November 2024, with European markets seeing the largest decline, while North America showed positive growth. The association anticipates North America and other overseas markets to contribute positively in 2025.

Hüllmann stressed that automation and digitalization are essential to maintaining competitiveness. “Automation helps reduce costs, improve efficiency, and ensure product quality, even with the challenges of recruiting skilled labor,” he said. The growing emphasis on wood as a sustainable material, driven by climate change discussions, is also benefiting the industry, with wooden construction on the rise in Europe and beyond.

The VDMA is urging the German government to implement reforms to maintain Germany’s competitive position. These include making the labor market more flexible, simplifying immigration processes, and removing bureaucratic barriers. Excessive regulations in timber construction are also seen as a hurdle, with Hüllmann calling for targeted deregulation. “Politicians must act now to secure Germany’s leadership in the industry,” Hüllmann warned.

Looking ahead, Ligna 2025, the world’s leading trade fair for woodworking machinery, will take place from May 26 to 30 in Hanover. Hüllmann highlighted the event’s importance, saying it will showcase the latest technological solutions and demonstrate how the industry is turning challenges into opportunities.
