ARGENTINA – Arauco Argentina is developing an investment of over USD 250 million to modernize its pulp mill in Puerto Piray, Misiones.

The project includes the installation of a new 39-megawatt turbo generator, which will initially supply power exclusively to the plant. The National Secretariat of Energy has approved the company’s change of category to “Self-Generator,” a requirement for advancing this new thermal power plant.

The new plant will be connected to the Argentine Interconnection System (SADI) through a transformer station in Wanda. Resolution 86/2025, signed by the Secretary of Energy, María Tettamanti, confirms that Arauco meets the requirements for entry into the Wholesale Electricity Market (MEM). In addition, the Ministry of Ecology of Misiones has already approved the environmental impact study for the project.

This development is part of Arauco’s strategy to expand its investments in Misiones, in line with its environmental commitment. The company was certified as the world’s first carbon-neutral forestry company five years ago and joined the JNR-REDD+ Jurisdictional Program in 2024 to support native forest conservation and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
