2017 was a record year for the production of plywood

USA – According to data published by FAO, in 2017 the global production of plywood panels hit a record number as it amounted to 160.57 million m3.

816FAO Over the course of a decade, performance by region was varied. In 2017 Asia was by far the main producing region with 132.79 million m3, which represented a growth of 113.3% compared to 62.25 million m3 produced in 2007. While the North American region, with 12.22 million m3 produced in 2017, observed in the course of a decade a fall of 20.3% as compared to the 15.34 million m3 produced in 2007. This strong contraction in North America is derived from the financial crisis of 2008.

In addition to Asia, the European region also showed significant growth in the span of ten years. It went from producing 7.69 million m3 in 2007, to producing 9.02 million m3 in 2017, which represented a growth of 17.3% in a decade.

In the comparison period, the South American region experienced a 4.3% drop as its plywood production went from 5.31 million m3 in 2007 to 5.08 million m3 in 2017.

By countries, in 2017 the main producing country was by far China with 117.31 million m3, followed by the US with 9.59 million m3, Indonesia (3.8 million m3), Russia (3.73 million m3), Malaysia (3.66 million of m3) and Japan (3.06 million m3).

Brazil (2.70 million m3), India (2.52 million m3), Canada (2.25 million m3) and Chile (1.36 million m3) were also among the top ten plywood producers in 2017.
