Aglomerados Cotopaxi Strengthens Forest Fire Prevention Efforts

ECUADOR –   Between August and October, Ecuador’s dry season heightens the risk of wildfires, with conditions often extending from July to November. The Ministry of Environment, Water and Ecological Transition (MAATE) reported more than 1,000 active fire outbreaks in 2024, affecting water sources and ecosystems.

In response, Aglomerados Cotopaxi continues to strengthen its comprehensive fire prevention and control program, launched in 2002 and recognized nationally for its environmental commitment in the Cotopaxi region.

The initiative began after a major fire on August 24, 2001, that burned 134 hectares in Hacienda Colcas. Today, the company operates five strategically located watchtowers and maintains a 30-member professional firefighting brigade trained for rapid response and early detection.

Aglomerados Cotopaxi’s program is seen as a pioneer in forest fire management in Ecuador. Most of its interventions support surrounding communities and protected areas — including the 2009 wildfire in Cotopaxi National Park. The company also trains park rangers, firefighters, and government officials, strengthening an interagency network with the Cotopaxi Prefecture, National Police, Armed Forces, and FAO.

“Every action we take — from monitoring to training — aims to protect life and our natural heritage. Prevention remains the most effective tool,” said Xavier Suárez, Head of Forest Management at Aglomerados Cotopaxi.

Through continuous training, community engagement, and institutional cooperation, Aglomerados Cotopaxi reaffirms its leadership in forest fire prevention, protecting Ecuador’s biodiversity, water resources, and communities.
