ECUADOR – Aglomerados Cotopaxi, one of the leading forest companies in the country, has signed a cooperation agreement with the Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ) to conduct pioneering research on the carbon storage potential of Ecuador’s páramo and pajonal ecosystems.
These ecosystems, managed by Aglomerados Cotopaxi, are crucial natural carbon reservoirs.
This partnership marks an important step in bridging the gap between industry and academia, focusing on quantifying the carbon stored in these unique, yet under-studied ecosystems.
The study will help Aglomerados Cotopaxi enhance its role in the carbon offset projects accelerator of the Emissions and Climate Change Program (PECC), adding value to its conservation areas and the country. “This project reflects our sustainability vision and the opportunity to create shared knowledge and value. By studying the carbon stored in our ecosystems, we aim to inspire other sectors to protect these vital spaces for environmental balance,” said María Gallardo, Head of Forest Research at Aglomerados Cotopaxi.
The scientific data generated will help advance carbon offset projects in Ecuador and highlight the vital role of conserving these critical natural spaces.
Led by Dr. Francisco Cuesta from USFQ, the research will also emphasize additional co-benefits, including water storage and biodiversity support. Once completed, the findings will be shared through a scientific publication, further promoting Ecuador’s conservation efforts and advancing sustainable practices for the future.
