GERMANY – Since August 1st, 2020, end consumers in Germany have found a new label in stores that gives them information about the quality of furniture: the “Furniture Made in Germany” seal.

895ALEMANIADeveloped by the VDM (The Association of the German Furniture Industry) in cooperation with the RAL Institute (German Institute for Quality Assurance and Labeling), the RAL registration 0191 seal ensures that the construction, assembly and quality testing of the furniture is carried out in Germany, in compliance with the criteria is checked by the German Furniture Quality Association (DGM).

DGM managing director Jochen Winning emphasizes: “Many consumers expect high quality from products from Germany per se. With the new guarantee of origin ‘Furniture Made in Germany’, we ensure that these expectations are fully confirmed and give a seal of approval to the place of origin and the quality promise attached to it.”

“Furniture made in Germany” means that according to the RAL registration 0191 the construction, assembly and quality testing take place in Germany. In addition, the manufacturing process relevant for quality must mainly take place in Germany. Interested furniture manufacturers have been able to register for the new certification since June 1, 2020. The first 31 manufacturers have already been tested and certified with the geographical guarantee of origin. They are allowed to mark their furniture programs with the new label in a clearly visible way for the end consumer.

The kitchen furniture manufacturers Express, Häcker, Impuls, Nobilia, Nolte, Rotpunkt and Schüller, as well as the two bathroom furniture manufacturers, Burgbad and Nolte Spa, have already received certification.

Audits are currently underway at a number of other furniture manufacturers. A total of 78 companies have already registered their interest in the label. “Originally we wanted to certify 50 furniture manufacturers by the end of the year. We will presumably exceed this target and thus spark an important signal effect at home and abroad for quality furniture from Germany”, said Winning optimistic about the future.
