U.S. – According to a recent report by e-commerce research specialist One Click Retail, furniture is one the fastest growing retail product categories on Amazon.
In 2016, online furniture sales grew by 18% to reach a 15% share or USD 10.5 billion of the USD 70 billion furniture market of the United States.
Year-to-date in 2017, Amazon is scooping up more of that market share, with data from One Click Retail showing a growth rate of 50% year-over-year to USD 2.3 billion.
The main home furnishings subcategory by far, according to the report is mattresses sets, including box springs and foundations. Business in the category is up 90% year to date (through Aug. 5) to USD 640 million, the report said. That’s followed by a 50% sales increase in bedroom furniture and a 45% gain in living room furniture sales. Bedroom and living room combined for USD 565 million is sales year to date, according to the report.
The report recognizes Amazon e-commerce competitors Wayfairand Overstock.comas the innovators and called Wayfair “the clear e-commerce leader in the online furniture sales category.”
“But Amazon is not content in second place,” said report author Nathan Rigby, One Click Retail’s vice president sales and marketing. He referred to reports of the e-commerce giant’s latest furniture building strategies, including new warehouses, a new pricing and delivery program for third-party furniture sellers and the launch of Amazon Home.
