Roseburg Shuts California Veneer Plant, Consolidates in Oregon

USA –   Roseburg Forest Products announced that it permanently ceased operations at its veneer plant in Weed, California, effective Dec. 3, 2025.

The company is consolidating veneer production at its mills in Oregon, where newly installed, high-efficiency equipment is designed to strengthen Roseburg’s long-term competitiveness in engineered wood and softwood plywood markets.

The closure follows Roseburg’s September 2025 decision to exit the hardwood plywood market, allowing the company to focus resources on a narrower product portfolio and sharpen its position in increasingly competitive wood products markets.

“With the investments at our veneer and softwood plywood mills in Riddle and Coquille, Oregon, we have repositioned these operations—and our Riddle engineered wood mill—to be among the most cost-competitive in the industry,” said Stuart Gray, Roseburg’s president and CEO. “These actions are essential for Roseburg to remain strong against growing volumes of low-cost imports affecting North American markets.”

Gray acknowledged the impact on employees and the Weed community, noting nearly 40 years of operations at the site. The company said it is evaluating options that could allow the facility to continue serving as an economic asset in the region.

The Weed plant’s approximately 140 employees will receive 60 days of compensation and healthcare coverage. Roseburg is encouraging them to apply for openings at other company sites and will provide support during the transition. The company will continue to meet existing contracts for renewable power generation from the site’s biomass facility.

Roseburg reaffirmed its commitment to the Weed community, including its USD 7 million contribution to establish a local foundation, continued support for the Weed Community Scholarship Fund, and provision of a rent-free firehouse for the City of Weed Fire Department.

Founded in 1936, Roseburg Forest Products is a leading U.S. producer of high-performance wood products and one of the nation’s largest private forest owners.
