ITALY –  Scm Group has developed a new predictive monitoring system that transforms the electrospindle of its CNC machining centers into an intelligent, sensor-based component capable of reducing costs, preventing failures, and optimizing machine lifecycle management.

The “Smart Spindle” innovation—awarded at the 19th SMAU event in Milan on November 5–6—uses sensors, software, and artificial intelligence to monitor key parameters such as temperature, vibration, and tool change cycles. Developed with Hiteco, the system gathers data through an onboard control unit and shares it with Scm Group’s Control Room, where AI models analyze trends and detect anomalies.

The platform can anticipate faults, automatically open service tickets, and trigger predictive maintenance actions, ensuring minimal disruption for customers. Scm Group emphasizes that all data remains customer-owned and anonymized in line with transparency and governance standards.

According to the company, Smart Spindle supports its broader digital transformation strategy, shifting Scm Group from a machinery supplier to a provider of interconnected smart services. The technology can reduce downtime by up to 30%, improve machining quality, and significantly lower operating costs.

The SMAU Innovation Award was accepted on November 5 by Antonio Latella, Product Owner Smart Sensors, and Luca Bergantini, Business Manager for CNC Machining and Drilling Centers.
