West Fraser Reduces Operations Due to Wood Market Pressures

USA –    West Fraser announced it will permanently close its lumber mills in Augusta, Georgia, and 100 Mile House, British Columbia, by the end of 2025 following an orderly wind-down. The decision reflects ongoing timber supply challenges and weak lumber markets.

The 100 Mile House mill can no longer access sufficient economically viable timber, a situation compounded by soft demand, higher duties, and additional tariffs. The closure will affect approximately 165 employees and reduce capacity by 160 million board feet.

The Augusta mill’s closure is driven by reduced lumber demand and the loss of viable residual outlets, affecting around 130 employees and cutting capacity by 140 million board feet.

West Fraser said it will seek to mitigate the impact on employees by offering opportunities at other operations where possible.

Additionally, the company confirmed that its previously curtailed mills in Huttig, Arkansas, and Lake Butler, Florida, will be permanently closed, with dismantling and site sales planned. Meanwhile, start-up has begun at the replacement mill in Henderson, Texas.

These measures are intended to strengthen West Fraser’s competitiveness in a challenging market. The company expects to record restructuring and impairment charges in 4Q-2025 related to the closures.

West Fraser operates over 50 facilities across Canada, the U.S., the U.K., and Europe, producing lumber, engineered wood products, pulp, and other materials while promoting sustainable forestry practices.
