Tariffs Threaten Ikea’s Affordable Pricing

USA –    Ikea, the Swedish home furnishings giant, has warned its U.S. customers of potential price increases following new tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump on imported furniture and lumber.

The new tariffs, effective October 14, 2025, include a 10% duty on softwood timber and a 25% tariff on kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities, and upholstered furniture. These rates are expected to rise in January 2026, potentially reaching up to 50% on certain products from countries deemed “non-cooperative.”

The U.S. is Ikea’s second-largest market after Germany, generating USD 5.5 billion in sales last fiscal year. However, approximately 90% of Ikea’s U.S. products are imported, mainly from China, Vietnam, and Poland, making the company particularly vulnerable to these tariffs.

“Our goal is to offer affordable, good-quality home furnishings to everyone,” Ikea said in a statement to Newsweek. “In our experience across markets, tariffs make these ambitions more difficult.”

The company added that it will strive to keep prices as low as possible but acknowledged that customers may notice price increases on certain furniture items. “These rising costs are beyond our control,” Ikea said, “as they result directly from government-imposed taxes.”

The new measures will also impact the broader wood and furniture industries. Canada, the U.S.’s largest supplier of softwood lumber, is expected to be significantly affected and has announced USD 870 million in aid for its timber sector. Key furniture exporters such as Vietnam and Mexico are also likely to face economic headwinds.

Despite these challenges, Ikea reaffirmed its commitment to the U.S. market. The company plans to open a new store in Manhattan’s SoHo district as part of a USD 2.2 billion investment by Ingka Group, Ikea’s largest global franchisee. This expansion reflects the retailer’s urban-focused strategy, shifting from traditional large warehouses to more accessible city-center locations.

While the tariffs may temporarily drive up prices, Ikea emphasized that its mission to offer affordable, sustainable, and well-designed home solutions remains unchanged.
