NEW ZELAND – Two years after construction began in Sylvia Park, Auckland, Ingka Group—the largest Ikea retailer—has confirmed that it will open its first store in New Zealand on December 4, 2025.
From day one, New Zealanders will have access to more than 7,500 home furnishing items in-store, online, and by phone. To mark the announcement, Ikea installed its iconic wordmark on the Sylvia Park building.
“The interest and anticipation for Ikea in New Zealand can be felt all the way to Sweden, and we are very humbled by it,” said Tolga Öncu, Ingka Retail Manager (COO). “Welcoming a new country to the Ikea family always brings special emotions, and we could not be more excited to meet the Kiwis soon.”
The Sylvia Park store will span 34,000 m², making it one of the largest in the region, and will include a Swedish Restaurant and Bistro offering classics such as meatballs and hot dogs—also in plant-based versions—plus exclusive New Zealand-only dishes. The building will run entirely on renewable energy, powered in part by a rooftop solar PV system, and will feature 25 EV charging stations for customers and additional chargers for delivery vehicles.
In a first for the retailer entering a new market, Ikea will also launch 29 Pick-Up Points across the country, alongside nationwide home delivery services. The Ikea Family loyalty program is already available in New Zealand, offering members exclusive benefits and early access.
When the doors open, New Zealand will be the first new market entered by Ikea’s largest retailer since Slovenia in 2021. The expansion is part of a global strategy to invest more than EUR 5 billion by FY27 in new locations and upgrades. The Sylvia Park store will also debut the Ikea Buy Back service, allowing customers to return pre-loved Ikea items—or even furniture from other retailers—for resale, promoting a more sustainable approach to home living.
