ITALY – The Italian kitchen furniture sector is navigating a period of consolidation and innovation as it works to recover from a modest downturn in value, following a two-year boom after the pandemic.
The decline was attributed to economic factors such as inflation and a general slowdown in the global economy.
Despite a modest negative performance in 2024, the sector is showing resilience, supported by strong growth in foreign demand, especially for high-end products. According to a CSIL analysis, total Italian kitchen furniture production is approximately 950,000 units, a level not seen since 2007.
Key trends in Italian kitchen furniture
- Concentration and exports: Production concentration is increasing, with the top five Italian manufacturers accounting for over 40% of the market. Exports now make up more than 30% of production, with significant growth in non-European markets, particularly in the Middle East and Asia. The United States remains the second-largest overall export market.
- Smart technology: Technological innovation is a major focus, with smart appliances and integrated lighting serving as key drivers of evolution. The integration of IoT and AI enables features like inventory management in refrigerators and customized oven settings. Built-in appliances now constitute over 25% of total kitchen sales in Italy.
- Multifunctional and sustainable spaces: Consumers are demanding more customized and multifunctional kitchens. Designs that integrate the kitchen with living areas represent almost 60% of Italian market sales, reflecting a desire for more social and flexible spaces. Sustainability has also become a critical investment area, with an increasing use of recycled materials, natural finishes, and low-impact production methods.
- European standing: Italy remains the world’s second-largest kitchen furniture exporter, after Germany. While the overall European market saw average value growth of about 2% between 2019 and 2024, export figures highlight Italy’s strong international position.
