USA – U.S. President Donald Trump announced that his administration has launched an investigation into imported furniture, with a decision expected within 50 days.
Writing on Truth Social, Trump said the measure is intended to “bring the furniture business back to North Carolina, South Carolina, Michigan, and other states across the Union.”
In 2024, the U.S. imported USD 25.5 billion worth of furniture, a 7% increase from 2023. Vietnam and China accounted for about 60% of these shipments, according to Furniture Today. Analysts warn that additional tariffs would likely push up prices for consumers and domestic manufacturers, though some suppliers may absorb part of the costs to maintain competitiveness in the U.S. market.
The announcement quickly impacted financial markets. Shares of import-heavy retailers such as Wayfair, Restoration Hardware and Williams-Sonoma declined, while La-Z-Boy, which manufactures much of its furniture in the U.S., saw its stock rise.
Experts note the timing is sensitive for the sector, as demand has slowed and inflationary pressures persist, meaning tariffs could add uncertainty for pricing and supply chains.
