PORTUGAL – On the eve of World Recycling Day, wood-based panel manufacturer Sonae Arauco announced a major milestone: the incorporation of 809,000 tons of recycled wood into its finished products in 2024, equivalent to 33% of its global production.
This marks an increase from 31% in 2023 and significantly surpasses the European industry average of 25%.
The company, a global leader in wood solutions for furniture and construction, reported a 12% increase in the volume of wood collected through its recycling centers in Portugal and Spain, totaling 282,000 tons—the equivalent of approximately 2.4 million trees.
“Sonae Arauco’s model is rooted in a circular bioeconomy. The integration of recycled wood is a vital component of our business,” said Nuno Calado, Wood Regulation & Sustainability Manager. “We follow the principle of cascading wood use, extending the life cycle of this precious and increasingly scarce material.”
In some product lines, Sonae Arauco already exceeds 70% recycled content, and the company aims to surpass 75% in certain regions by the end of 2025. To achieve this, EUR 13 million is being invested in technology upgrades, two new recycling centers in Portugal, and the development of innovative methods to incorporate recycled wood fibers into MDF solutions on an industrial scale.
Sonae Arauco continues to explore further growth opportunities and investments across Europe, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and innovation in the wood industry.
