GERMANY – Bedroom furniture manufacturer Nolte Möbel GmbH & Co. KG will permanently cease operations by the end of July, bringing an end to the company’s 70-year history.
The Germersheim-based firm informed its remaining 230 employees of the closure on April 28, with official layoff notices issued the following day.
The closure comes after the company filed for insolvency in November 2023 at the Landau Regional Court. Despite restructuring efforts, leadership changes, and attempts to find investors, Nolte Möbel was unable to recover. Annual revenue dropped sharply from approximately EUR 100 million to EUR 65 million in 2023, according to insolvency administrator Steffen Rauschenbusch of the Mannheim-based firm Ernestus.
Founded in 1955, Nolte Möbel was once among the leading bedroom furniture manufacturers in Europe and a major employer in the region, with a workforce that previously exceeded 1,000. The company also gained recognition for its sustainability practices, earning certification as a climate-neutral manufacturer in 2021.
The closure affects only Nolte Möbel GmbH & Co. KG and not the broader Nolte Group, which has operated independently since a 2020 restructuring and remains financially stable.
The future of the Germersheim production site remains unclear.
