BIFMA Urges Caution on Potential Tariffs Impacting U.S. Furniture Industry

USA – BIFMA, representing commercial furniture manufacturers and suppliers across North America, emphasizes the importance of free trade in maintaining competitive global supply chains.

The association warns against new tariffs that could disrupt trade relationships and supply chains, particularly under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which replaced NAFTA in 2020.

The U.S. furniture sector contributes nearly $15 billion annually to the economy, employing over 65,000 workers. Potential tariffs targeting imports from Mexico, Canada, and China could harm established trade networks and increase costs, impacting both commercial and consumer furniture prices. This could lead to reduced demand and job losses, especially as the industry recovers from the pandemic.

BIFMA also highlights the risks to North American reshoring efforts, as new tariffs would disrupt hybrid production models developed in Mexico and Canada. International competitors sourcing parts from non-tariffed countries could gain a cost advantage, further disadvantaging U.S. manufacturers.

The association advocates for balanced trade policies that preserve regional partnerships while addressing economic challenges. BIFMA urges policymakers to reconsider aggressive tariff measures to avoid unintended consequences that could harm U.S. manufacturers’ global competitiveness.

BIFMA, based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is a non-profit trade association with over 250 members, representing commercial furniture manufacturers and suppliers in North America. Founded in 1973, it sets industry standards for safety, performance, and sustainability, including the level® certification program to assess the environmental impact of furniture products.
