ECUADOR – Novopan, the leading wooden panel manufacturer in the country, and the Zuleta Community have joined forces to promote sustainable tourism and environmental conservation.
Over the past year, they’ve implemented practices that balance social, biological, commercial, and tourism aspects, boosting the local economy and protecting ecosystems.
This partnership has established a responsible tourism model, with the community leading natural resource preservation. “Responsible forestry not only aligns with sustainability but promotes it. In Zuleta, it has facilitated aquifer restoration, soil conservation, and the protection of native flora and fauna,” says Cristian Durán, Forest Manager at Novopan.
Sustainable practices have helped recover Andean páramo species lost due to intensive land use, educating visitors on the importance of preserving the environment. In 2024, over 1,400 tourists visited the area, generating new local businesses and recognizing Zuleta for its environmental best practices.
This collaboration, awarded the 2023 Sacha Prize for Ecosystem Services, strengthens Novopan’s commitment to conservation and its vision of continuing to collaborate with the community to tackle environmental challenges.
