GERMANY – The 13th European Wood-Based Panel Symposium, held from October 9-11 in Hamburg, welcomed a record number of delegates from over 30 countries, according to the European Panel Federation (EPF).
This biennial event gathered experts, researchers, and industry leaders globally, offering a platform for insightful presentations, discussions, and networking opportunities within the wood-based panel industry.
This year’s symposium focused on market trends, resources, AI, recycling, resins, and developments shaping the future of wood-based panels. With 375 attendees from 30 countries, participants heard from keynote speakers, engaged in panel discussions, and explored innovations driving industry growth.
Highlights included:
- Calls for a construction offensive to address the needs of “thin wallets, big dreams” and for the wood sector to unite in public.
- New MDF recycling techniques could enhance carbon storage in Europe, exemplified by Japan’s reported 20% annual contribution from panels.
- AI’s role in process engineering for wood-based panels is now a reality.
- Europe leads in innovation within the wood-based panel sector, with rapid advancements in resins, waxes, and additives.
- Sustainability is key, but a reduced regulatory burden and stronger political support are essential for maximizing societal contributions.
In addition to expert presentations, the event featured an exhibition space showcasing state-of-the-art technologies and solutions.
