AUSTRIA – Egger, a major global producer of wooden panels, is dedicated to achieving a “Net Zero” target by 2025, aiming to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions across its entire value chain through extensive measures and investments.
At its Unterradlberg plant in Lower Austria, Egger has installed a new heat exchanger, enabling production without reliance on natural gas during normal operations. This innovation, completed after approximately a year of construction, allows Egger to produce particleboards without natural gas usage, instead utilizing steam from the existing biomass power plant to heat thermal oil for various processes.
Moreover, Egger is investing approximately EUR 80 million in a renewable energy power plant at its main facility in St. Johann in Tirol. This facility will utilize biogenic fuels to generate heat and electricity for Egger’s production processes, significantly reducing fossil fuel usage on-site and providing more sustainable heating for surrounding communities. Scheduled for operation in the first quarter of 2026, this project will substantially increase Egger’s self-sufficiency in electricity production at the St. Johann in Tirol plant.
Additionally, Egger is enhancing sustainability in its production by sourcing binding agents from its own CO2-neutral glue factories in Wismar (DE), Radauti (RO), and Hexham (UK), which have transitioned to using electricity from renewable sources since January 1, 2024.
